DB awards Implenia the Contract for the Albvorland Tunnel
The DB Projekt Stuttgart–Ulm GmbH awarded the contract to build the 8176 m long Albvorland Tunnel on the new Wendlingen–Ulm route to the Swiss construction and service provider company Implenia in late December, 2015. The contract is worth some 380 million euros. Eight firms took part in the competition, which invited tenders from all over Europe.
“With the Albvorland Tunnel, the last of the eight large tunnels for the Stuttgart–Ulm rail project has been awarded”, says Jens Hallfeldt, DB project manager for the Albvorland section. “We are delighted that we are now also able to tackle the complex and complicated area around Wendlingen on the Neckar in construction technical terms”.
In addition to producing the Albvorland Tunnel, the contract includes the building of the two links for the new rail route between Stuttgart and Ulm with the existing Plöchingen–Tübingen rail line. This relates firstly to the Wendlingen Curve including a further 494 m long tunnel for the Stuttgart–Tübingen connection. Secondly, the goods train route between Ulm and Plöchingen including a 173 m long tunnel below the A8 federal motorway is to be built by the contractor.
The construction site installations as well as preparatory activities started in early 2016 with the main construction measures due to begin in summer 2016. Two tunnel boring machines are to be deployed to excavate the Albvorland Tunnel.
