Repair Works in the Gotthard Base Tunnel

According to Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), the repair work on the Gotthard Base Tunnel is progressing as planned. SBB continues to expect the tunnel to be fully reopened in September 2024.

The derailment of a cargo train in the tunnel on 10 August 2023 had caused serious damage. After extensive work to clear and salvage the tunnel, SBB assessed the damage caused by the derailment of the train. Based on findings from autumn 2023, the amount of damage, including loss of earnings, was estimated at around 100 to 130 million euros.
