Zurich Weinberg Tunnel: Installing the Rail Technology
Along with the underground through station – Löwenstraße – the roughly 4.8 km long, twin-track Weinberg Tunnel in Zurich forms the core of the SBB
Zurich Cross Rail (DML) project, which connects Zurich Central Station with Oerlikon Station. The approx. 4.38 km long hard rock stretch was driven using a tunnel boring machine, which had to be converted to a Mixshield (Herrenknecht S-451) for the final section leading to the target shaft at Zurich Central.
