Safety Concepts for Shield Driving in Berlin/D
A 3.4 km long mainline tunnel for the 4-track north-south link for long-distance and regional services was built as the core of Berlin’s central area (ZBB). The following report examines the various safety concepts for shield driving in Berlin.
Traffic Concept
A 3.4 km long mainline tunnel for the 4-track north-south link for long-distance and regional services was built as the core of Berlin’s central area (ZBB) (Fig. 1). Its manner of construction was determined by local conditions and the soil and groundwater conditions: cut-and-cover with excavation pits with underwater concrete base, shield drives with monocoque segmental lining and application of the caisson method so that the groundwater was affected as little as possible.
