Renovation of the Old Mainz Tunnels

The 4-track upgrading of the section between Mainz Central Station and Mainz-Süd belongs to the development of the Mainz-Mannheim route. After the new 2-track Mainz Tunnel was commissioned in October 2003 at present the two old 2-track Mainz Tunnels are being renovated after the tracks of the former route were closed down. The tunnel enlargement calls for special measures on account of the sensitive buildings on the surface. It is intended to reopen the route with the 2 renovated tunnels in the year 2010.
