Nothing on this February 8, 1960 indicated that things were soon about to change. The Economic Miracle’s ever growing stream of traffic congested the narrow cobblestone-lined roads of downtown Düsseldorf and conversion to a “car-dominated city” seemed to be the trend throughout the country. On this day a 25-year old civil engineering student from the RWTH Aachen called Günter Girnau, still engaged in his studies and highly interested in highway construction was travelling to Düsseldorf to present his credentials to the newly established STUVA.
