New Semmering Base Tunnel:
Work commences

The 27.3 km long new Semmering Base Tunnel, which will link Mürzzuschlag in Styria with Gloggnitz in Lower Austria, is one of Europe’s biggest infrastructure projects. After obtaining permission for building a year ago, work started in April 2012. The first construction activities are taking place at the Gloggnitz portal zone; these include the building of a number of rail and road bridges as well as site yards for the tunnel drives in addition to structures for protection against flooding.
