Liefkenshoek Rail Tunnel in Service since December 2014
Since the new timetable came into force at the end of 2014 the Port of Antwerp possesses a direct rail link from the right to the left bank of the Schelde. The route through the Liefkenshoek rail tunnel connects Antwerp-North goods station with the marshalling yard south. Formerly freight trains from Germany, Switzerland and Eastern Europe had to reach the Berchem district in the north of the city and then travel back through the busy Kennedy rail tunnel to get to the southern marshalling yard – a detour of roughly 22 km taking more than 40 min.
