Breakthrough and Launch Ceremony at the
Brenner Base Tunnel
On 17 and 18 September 2024, Brenner Base Tunnel SE (BBT SE) hosted the breakthrough celebration for section H41 Sillschlucht and the launch ceremony for section H53 Pfons. This means that work on one of Europe‘s largest tunnelling projects in both Austria and Italy is making great strides forward. In the Brenner Base Tunnel, we spoke with the two board members of BBT SE, Dipl.-Ing. Martin Gradnitzer (Austria) and Dott. Ing. Gilberto Cardola (Italy), about this extraordinary project.
Of the tunnel system, which is over 220 km long in total, 180 km have currently been driven – 80 km of which are main tunnels, 56 km exploratory tunnels and 44 km access, rescue and logistics tunnels. September 2024 saw many important milestones, such as the breakthrough and the start of the last two TBMs in the Austrian project area. Five tunnel boring machines, four in Austria and one in Italy, are driving the main tunnels.
