Successful 2012 German tunnel Forum

The STUVA and the international trade journal tunnel together with 5 partners from industry successfully staged the 2nd German tunnel Forum in Stuttgart and Munich. More than 30 participants in Stuttgart and more than 25 in Munich closely followed the presentations by Prof. Alfred Haack in the chair and the 6 lecturers (Figs. 1 + 2) on November 6 + 7, 2012.

Chaired by Prof. Alfred Haack a top team presented special tunnel topics dealing with “Design Aspects in Transport Tunnels” in the course of a day. The new series of seminars concentrates on qualified further training, exchanging ideas and meeting up with colleagues. In 2012 the main theme was “Traffic Safety and Flow of Traffic”.

In 2013 the 1-day seminar will hone in on “Light, Colour and social Safety (Psychology)” in the 38th calendar week with Hamburg and Berlin planned as the venues.  Please jot down the details of the 3rd German tunnel Forum scheduled for September 2013 now. This successful series will continue in 2014 with “Architecture and Technology” taking centre stage.

The participants were particularly pleased with the choice of topics and the way in which the various aspects were communicated by the lecturers. Prof. Haack’s extremely appropriate comments were also highly appreciated (Fig. 3).

To start the ball rolling, Prof. Wolfgang Baltzer (Fig. 4) of the BUNG Ingenieure AG, Heidelberg/D and the TU Aachen’s Faculty for Highway Design, Highway Construction, Tunnel Design and Operation, Aachen/D explained the planning principles for highways: the RABT and European codes of practice. Dipl.-Ing. Martin Muncke (Fig. 5) of the ÖBB – Austrian Federal Railway Infrastruktur AG, Vienna/A – then tackled planning principles for mainline rail traffic: the EBA Guideline and European codes of practice. Christof Ferrlein (Fig. 6) of the Stadtwerke Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main GmbH/D then dealt with the planning principles for rail commuter transportation: BOStrab and European codes of practice.  Dr. Matthias Wehner (Fig. 7) of HBI Haerter GmbH in Heidenheim/D provided interesting details relating to road tunnels.

Following a lunch break with plenty of time for exchanging views and discussion Prof. Paul Pauli (Fig. 8), Biological Psychology, Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy of the University of Würzburg/D dealt with the highly exciting factor man and his effect on designing tunnels. Afterwards technology was accorded pride of place involving forks and intersections in road tunnels: here Dipl.-Ing. Claus-Dieter Hauck (Fig. 9) from the Regional Capital of Stuttgart’s Foundation Engineering Office provided an insight of findings obtained from practice. The subsequent paper on the effects of designing tunnel portals was again presented by Prof. Baltzer.

The participants, lecturers and above all the industrial partners – Fermacell GmbH, Höntzsch GmbH, Kapyfract GmbH, Schlitknecht Messtechnik AG and TPH Bausysteme GmbH were able to profit highly from the breaks. Info sessions were scheduled for the intervals, at which the firms involved briefly presented themselves to the participants and responded to questions.

The new programme with the final dates for the 2013 German tunnel Forum will be announced as soon as possible. Nonetheless to be on the safe side please keep the 38th calendar week 2013 free.
