Contracts signed for the Isarco River Underpass
At the end of a public tender procedure published at the European level, BBT SE awarded the contract for executive planning and works for the Isarco River Underpass to the temporary consortium made up by Salini Impregilo S.p.A., as representing company, Strabag AG, Strabag S.p.A., Consorzio Cooperative Costruzioni CCC Società Cooperativa e Collini Lavori S.p.A.
This temporary consortium will complete the 301 million euro project in eight years. The construction lot is the southernmost section of the Brenner Base Tunnel project and is located near the railway station of Fortezza in Pra di Sopra, Italy. In 2014, BBT SE started works for a total of 681 million euros.
Details of the Construction Lot
The works include 4.3 km of main tunnels and 2.3 km of tunnels that connect with the existing railway line. Some tunnel stretches will be built completely underground and excavated partly by blasting and partly by drilling.
Particular care was taken to develop technical solutions that respect the environment and the surrounding ecosystems. During the works, BBT SE will invest a total of 1.3 million euros to constantly monitor environmental issues. Part of the construction site will be an important water treatment plant for water flowing out of the excavated tunnel and from construction site areas. The plant, which was specifically built for the construction period, will be dismantled once construction is completed.
To avoid hindering road traffic, the part of the state road SS 12 near the construction site will be temporarily re-located next to the A22 highway. The existing railway line, on the other hand, will be permanently moved southwards. Further works include the construction of a loading/unloading area for spoil directly adjacent to the A22 highway and linked to the construction site by special roads.
The works will be carried out under the project management of Italferr S.p.A., which won the pertinent contract for 7.7 million euros after a public tender. After completion of the works, expected to take place in 2023, the entire construction site will be restored to the state it was in before the works began.
