Hard-Working TBM breaks through at Pinglu Tunnel

A veteran Double Shield completed one of the world’s longest single-drive TBM tunnels, at 25.4 km (15.8 mi), on November 14, 2010 (Fig. 1). The 4.8 m (15.7 ft) diameter machine bored the Pinglu Tunnel, the most recent leg of China’s Yellow River Water Diversion Project, for the Sino-Austria Hydraulic Engineering Co. Ltd (SAHEC) JV, led by Alpine Bau GmbH (Fig. 2).
